Addis Ababa Vocational Training Program Introduces 11 New Professions
Addis Ababa vocational training program has introduced 11 new professions for grade 11 students for 2019 (E.C.). An implementation manual has been published by Addis Ababa Education Bureau in this regard.
According to the implementation manual, each student will choose only one type of profession that is related to their abilities and interests, and schools are not required to implement all 11 types of professions at once. In 2017 and 2018, students in secondary schools were asked to choose one of eight types of professions from the following fields:
– Agriculture,
– Information Technology and Computer Science,
– Health Science,
– Construction,
– Manufacturing,
– Communication and Social Science,
– Business Science, and
– Fine Arts.
Now, in 2019, 11 new types of professions are being introduced to Grade 11 students in the second round, and an implementation manual has been prepared to implement these in schools and for students to choose. The 11 types of professions included in this new implementation system are divided into six main career clusters:
– Building sector: electrical wiring and plumbing.
– Manufacturing sector: metal technology, automotive technology, and textile technology.
– Business sector: hotel services, hairdressing and beauty services, and food preparation.
– In addition, software development, agricultural science, and healthcare services are offered to students.
According to the implementation manual, a school is not required to offer all 11 types of professions; rather, it can choose and implement a select few based on its capacity and the needs of the community. To facilitate the implementation, the bureau has also provided schools and students with sample forms for selection along with the manual.
