Students at Tigray Universities Request Transfer to other Universities

Students at Tigray universities are requesting to be transferred to universities outside the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

It has been reported that some students and teachers at four public universities in the Tigray region are submitting requests to be transferred to other universities in the country due to security concerns in the region. The requests have reportedly come from students and teachers at the following universities:

– Mekelle University

– Axum University

Adigrat University

– Raya University

Hayelom Siyum, president of the Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions Students Union, who provided clarification on the matter, stated that while students and teachers are submitting complaints due to security concerns, no transfer decisions or commitments have been made by the Ministry of Education so far.

The requests by Tigray students are linked to ongoing confrontation between between Tigray regional leaders and Ethiopian federal government officials. According to analysts, there is threat of war between Tigray region and Ethiopian federal government. The two parties fought a two year long war recently which ended in November 2022.
