Tigray Regional Education Bureau Rolls Out New Curriculum
Tigray Regional Education Bureau announced the new curriculum. Schools will implement a new curriculum from 2019, which will change a number of things.
Under the old curriculum, students started learning Amharic in the third grade. It’s no longer like that. The new policy will require the start of Amharic instruction in the seventh grade.
Tigray introduced the new subject, civic education. There was no subject like this in the old curriculum. Students will have an opportunity to learn about their roles and responsibilities as citizens earlier in their education. The bureau stated that the old curriculum was no longer meeting the needs.
The existing curriculum for the region over the last 16 years was failing to make a meaningful contribution to the region’s work towards its vision, the bureau said.
Furthermore, the bureau emphasized the need to modernize the education system to catch up with the current era. This was not a quick and easy decision, nor was it made by a few individuals. The new curriculum, according to the Tigray Regional Education Bureau, has been prepared by 14 professors and professionals from the university.
They brought in concepts from all over the globe. The curriculum was based on local experiences. Elements of civic education were introduced from Asia. The Nordic, Northern European, and Western European countries influenced attitudes towards equality and accountability.
It’s a good idea to combine local context with international best practice. It’s not just replicating what works in other areas. It’s adapting it to meet the local needs. Creating a curriculum like this is not free, and it’s been funding-related. UNICEF promised $550,000 to help develop the new curriculum.
However, those funds have not been completely released by the federal government. To date, only $ 200,000 has been contributed to the project. This still leaves $350,000 unpaid.
The Tigray Regional Education Bureau confirmed that the new curriculum will be used for teaching and learning in the 2019 academic year.
